Remember this stunning piece worn by Rihanna?
Rihanna wore this piece at this year's 2017 Met Gala and stunned everyone at the event. Of course, we have to give credit to the designer who crafted this amazing avant-garde piece. Rei Kawakubo, japanese designer and head of fashion label Commes des Garçons, is the mastermind behind it all.
After the appearance of the gorgeous floral piece, The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened an exhibition on May 4, 2017. The exhibition is held until September 4,2017 giving a 4 month period to showcase Commes des Garçons womenswear collection inspired by the 1980's. Her ability to challenge and innovate new ideas are phenomenally shown as she recreates her designs with inspiration of 1980's fashion, beauty and femininity.
Without further a due, let's take a look at 3 of Rei Kawakubo's work at the Met.
Blood and Roses.
Blood and Roses was a key theme for Rei Kawakubo in her spring/summer 2015 collection. The femininity and boldness created in this piece is extraordinarily powerful. The model here embraces her feminine side in this one piece crafted with two bold avant-garde roses with a statemented curly hair style.
18th Century Pink.
18th Century Pink was showcased in Commes des Garçons Fall/Winter 2016-17 collection. Rei Kawakubo channeled her inner punk fashion style to recreate this 18th century traditional fashion. Rei Kawakubo was inspired by the distinct punk fashion elements and the 18th century where it was a time period of growth and change.
The Infinity of Tailoring.
Last but not least, we have The Infinity of Tailoring showcased in her Fall/Winter 2013-14 collection. Tailoring has been around for a long time and Ms. Kawakubo has certainly captured the essence of exactly what tailoring is all about. With an avant-garde look to a classic suit style, this piece speaks for itself and shows all of Kawakubo's innovation and uniqueness.
The art of avant-garde is certainly something that is different and unique compared to the fashion norm. However, it brings a fresh new taste to the fashion industry and inspires many other designers to recreate these looks into modern trends.
